Death of the circus-the end of Big Brother

Well it had to happen eventually, Big Brother has ended in tragedy.
At least it looks like tragedy if the rumours surrounding the forced eviction of housemates John and Ashley are anything to go by. The rumours suggest that they may have acted inappropriately towards another female housemate. I have no way of knowing whether or not this was true as Channel 10 have shut down every possible news source. This so-called social experiment is exposed for what it is (once again) amost cynical attempt to grab ratings with absolute low-cost garbage. One blogger comments:
What "Social experiment" Big Brother feeds them alcohol and forces sleep degredation (sic) upon them. Well WHAT a surprise that it has gone too far! The BB producers are the real culprits and need to be forced to walk the plank. see here
I would concur. The ever cynical Ms Killeen who treads the moral high ground is a passenger on this fiasco. She sneers away through the criticism of others. When evicted housemate called BB manipulative for the way they chose to show edited highlights out of context she almost sneered him to death.
To anyone the truth of his accusations was obvious. What Killeen appeared to have difficulty dealing with was her dislike of said housemate. Will she have anything intelligent or genuinely sensitive to say about the latest turn of events?
Now the inevitable has happened.
Some of the questions that are crossing my mind:
  • Will BB be sued for failure to exercise duty of care by deliberately putting people in dangerously threatening environments?
  • Will people be prosecuted?
  • Will we stop this glut of "reality" TV and go back to Dixon of Dock Green (shows my age)
Can always hope!!!

Its certainly a sad stage of events I agree that has led to Camilla being sexually assaulted by those two men. I have images on my blog if you want proof that it did occur.

In regards to Ms Killeen, I believe she will be personally appalled as a staunch supporter of womens' rights despite herscripted professional demeanour on BB tonight.

I am deeply sorry for Camilla.
We are seeing everything happen, from denigrating her because of her past behaviour, to (Gaelan) saying she loved it (Gaelan has now reaped his eviction reward!)
To saying it is OK because she says it is just a joke.
It is often the case that victims feel guilty thinking they are to blame. How sad it was to see Camilla doing this!
Personally, there can never be any excuse for one man holding a woman down while another "jokes" with her in a way that they have decided is funny.

Will we stop this glut of "reality" TV

I really hope so. There was a time when Ten attempted to provide interesting and groundbreaking TV--even if they had to poach it from the ABC as was the case with Good News Week. Even the BB format itself has potential--but Ten of course had the lowest common denominator to chase. As is evidenced by the current line-up of non-entities they have in the house. And look at the result.

I also feel sad that they have capitulated in the popular assumption that the only people worth watching are thin and "beautiful".
Ohhh...and I forgot to mention boring!! (in the main).
In that sense it is not reality TV at all

I don’t think you are giving Camilla enough credit as an educated grown adult to make her own mind up about her feelings.

Instead of demonising these guys who Camilla still considers her friends, let's point out that this incident makes it crystal clear that there needs to be more, not less, open discussion of sex in our society, as these young men obviously didn't know where the line between a 'joke' and potential assault is.

Also, there are conflicting media reports on what actually happened, so you should watch the video if you are going to comment.

Dear Anon,
I don't wish to underestimate the formidable Camilla.
I just think that half the problem is that our society has often tended to justify it ...as "demonising guys".
Come on "these young men obviously didn't know where the line between a 'joke' and potential assault is" isn't that a version of the Nuremberg defence!?
Ignorance is no excuse we often say. Let's mean that!!!
